Students studying Mandarin in Dexter read the story of the Little Monkey King in second grade, and they had a good understanding of this classic character in Chinese literature and culture. Journey to the West has been designed as a project-based learning topic for the 6th graders. Around this project students watch the Journey to the West cartoon, learn about the background and characters, design the stories centered on the Monkey King, and learn Chinese vocabulary and sentence patterns. Students who choose to continue their Chinese studies in 7th and 8th grade have a solid foundation in Chinese and reading the classical works of Chinese literature they know well will help them significantly in their Chinese language skills.
