Community and Team Building

Jessica Baese

Howell Nature Center (HNC) fee for 15 students at Dexter Alternative School (DAS) to experience kayaking, the zip line and learn about the HNC animal rehab facility on September 17, 2024. (This is the minimum number of students that can participate and we hope to have at least 15 students in our program next year.) This will be the first off-site field trip for the new 2024-2025 DAS cohort.

In the fall of 2024 we will have a new group of students at Dexter Alternative School (DAS) and since we are a small program our goal is to build a sense of community in our building so students feel comfortable with one another and support one another. This activity will be our first field trip as a group and it will provide a wonderful opportunity for our students to get to know each other a little bit more and to share new experiences together.

We were fortunate enough to go to the Howell Nature Center (HNC) this past fall and our students really opened up and enjoyed the activities we had planned. Since I had to plan ahead and reserve a date at HNC, our current students reflected on our experience this year and helped me select new activities at HNC that they thought future students would enjoy as well. We selected kayaking, zip lining and a wild animal rehab tour for our 2024 HNC visit (last year we did a team building activity and archery and the kids walked around to see the animals at lunch).
