Our Human Journey Trip to UM Museums
Cheryl Darnton
Admission to the UM Natural History Museum and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology to learn about genetics, prehistoric and ancient human artifacts.
The field trip to the UM Museums is a culminating experience for the students enrolled in the "Our Human Journey" elective class at Mill Creek. In the class, students learn about human evolution, DNA, human migration out of Africa, the development of ancient civilizations, among other things. During the UM Natural History Museum phase of the field trip, students get to explore hands-on exhibits on genetics to learn more about mutations and adaptations, they get to see skeletons and models of our pre-human ancestors, and lots more that may or may not pertain to the class. During the docent-led tour of the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, students get to see actual artifacts from the ancient civilizations that came before us, and they get to participate in an educational activity. Over the years we have engaged in the Burial Boxes activity, playing the ancient game of Ur, and doing a simulation to learn about democracy in ancient Greece.
